It was a death sentence. An innocent man was condemned. All the more worse it was given to a loving, good and accomplished man.
Here was a joyful and playful human being who was making a real
difference in the world. He had a beautiful wife, a soulmate, and three
small adoring children. His life was filled with close family,
colleagues and loving friends.
Then he is told to get ready. It would all soon be taken away. He would die.
How wonderful!
Wonderful?
How tragic!
No, wonderful, and was his fault and his intent.
You may already know the story. I thought I did too, though I’d not
read or seen it. It’s called “The Last Lecture.” His name is Randy
Pausch.
I knew his story from the news. But I hadn’t seen his talk or even looked inside the book, a huge bestseller.
By all accounts, Randy was born a joyful spirit. Smart, yet geeky as a
youngster, but personable with an indomitable spirit. He grew into a
handsome young man who never had to fight off the ladies.
A charmed life? Of course he had difficulties. “Brick walls” as he called them. But he was always winner.
Since the story about Randy is so widespread now, I won’t go on about
that. But even if you’re familiar with his story you may not have had
the “spiritual touch” that he presented. You can, if you like.
Until last night I hadn’t either.
Diane Sawyer did several interviews with him, his family and friends,
on ABC, which they reran last night. Because Randy died Last week.
I felt compelled to watch her show. Thank God.
As it got later into the night, I couldn’t stop thinking about him and
his legacy. I found the lecture online and watched it, all 76 minutes
of it.
