How To Build A Digital Empire
Digital empires have already been built and many of us are building new
ones. The good news is that there is plenty more room. Especially for
those who are willing to pay and pave their way with diligence,
investment in their futures and follow-up.
With smart moves and wise applications of new knowledge, amazing things
are possible today. But not everything is to be believed. You will need
help. What you are willing to do in return will be proportionate to
your success.
Some years ago I had a business associate who was also a practicing MD.
While he was a good doctor, he felt that his calling was to be an
entrepreneur.
His income as an MD was solely determinate on his physical presence.
That’s true for most jobs and careers, so no surprise there.
I owned part of a company where he’d become an independent distributor.
we had a line of nutrition products designed at a prestigious
university, so it was in alignment with his beliefs.
His part time income was increasing to the degree that it would one day
surpass that of his medical practice. But he knew he needed additional
help if he was to become a successful entrepreneur.
In return for coaching him and letting him in on the “inside,” I made a deal with him.
We had corporate jet and were in the sky a lot. He would leave his
practice for days at a time and get his questions answered with us as
we flew around the country. We paid his expenses, and in return for our
coaching, he spoke and consulted for us and our customers for no charge.
He later said that his coaching with us was worth far more than he paid
for his medical education. He later became a highly successful
entrepreneur.
In some businesses, you can make a full time income while working part
time. Anything with a royalty attached such as books or other
intellectual properties that are continually marketed are good examples.
Owning a franchise and being an absentee manager is often thought of as the ideal too.
The digital empire approach – Websites, automated to sell products, take money and send emails, among other things.
WARNING: None of these are what they first appear to be. Especially online marketing.
Granted, less physical presence and more flexibility is very possible
to more people via an Internet marketing business. But there’s a price
to pay here too.
An acquaintance of mine said that he just wanted to do affiliate marketing. How hard could that be, he asked?
He’d purchased a really bad ebook on the subject. By the end of it, all
he knew for sure was that the author claimed he’d made a small fortune
marketing ebooks.
Unfortunately, the ebook was absent of techniques or any systematic
approach. But, it did say it was all really “simple.” Oh, goodie!
When I asked who he would market to beyond his own warm list, he was
stumped. Then I asked would he do PPC or organic traffic building,or a
combination? Again, “Huh?”
I asked him what he planned to affiliate with or did he yet know? He didn’t.
Did he know where to find affiliate products? He did not. Had he decided on a niche? Head scratching initiated.
He’d also mentioned marketing some of his own intellectual property
online. He had how-to articles and other writings he could turn into
digital products.
Great, I said. What’s the plan? He had none.
This made me think of my old MD friend. One of his challenges was that
once he became a doctor, friends and family and even acquaintances
seemed to think nothing of taking his time to get his professional
answers to their problems.
Of course he was happy to do what he could, but his income was largely
dependent on the amount of time and patients he could see every day.
The higher my profile gets in the Internet marketing world, the more I
get such requests. Though they are generally less complicated or as
time consuming as the doctor’s, they are a challenge when they pile up.
So, what I decided to do with my friend who wants to do some “simple
online marketing,” was to gift him with a course I co-created on
Internet marketing. First Step Internet Marketing.
He would get a much more thorough training than I would have time to
give, and then, when he really understood the basics, I could help him
even more with his better educated questions.
I’m doing the same with my Internet coaching clients now. I include this $600 course with any 3-month agreement.
Their progress is magnified by dual input. During and after the course,
their questions are more pertinent and specific to their needs.
The most important thing to remember is that there is no absentee
business without a lot of upfront knowledge, effort, time and yes,
money too.
Freebies on the web, free “expert” advice and quick riches books aren’t worth much if you don’t have the basics.
That said, the Internet is one of the best, if not the best methods for
creating a business that you can work at anytime you like.
I love working with my Internet business. I can go to a matinee if I
like, then sit in a coffee shop and market and fine tune my projects
afterwards.
But I hardly ever do that. I work most days and late many nights. It’s
a long term building process that is well worth the effort. Digital
empires are not built overnight.
My MD friend was not only smart, he was wise. He sought out expertise
he didn’t have. The money he gave up from not being at his practice was
returned to him many times over in the years to come.
Not everyone can afford to hire a coach and not everyone can afford to
take a course. But everyone who has investigated the potential of
digital empires or even part time income, needs to rethink “afford.”
Imagine someone wrongly accused and arrested for a crime they didn’t
commit. Their bail is $10,000, which they didn’t have. How long do you
think most people would need to find that money?
Entrepreneurial success is not overnight but well worth the days and
nights you’ll spend to learn then implement your knowledge. Besides,
knowledge is not power, but the use of knowledge is.
Find the way. If not with a coach, you must at least learn the basics. It shouldn’t cost you anywhere near that $10,000 figure.
